Mealworm Basics

Mealworms are a versatile feeder insect enjoyed by many insect-eating animals. They are commonly fed to reptiles, birds, chickens, amphibians, and some small mammals.

Common mealworm eaters include:

• Reptiles such as bearded dragons, geckos, and many other insect-eating lizards
• Birds, including wild birds and pet birds
• Chickens and other poultry
• Amphibians such as frogs
• Some small mammals and other insect-eating pets

Mealworms should be kept refrigerated when you're not actively feeding them. Refrigeration slows their development and helps keep them in the mealworm stage longer.

Keep them in the container they arrive in, with their wheat bran bedding. Make sure the container has some ventilation and isn't sealed airtight.

Avoid storing mealworms in direct sunlight or in a warm location. Check them periodically and remove any dead mealworms or pieces of food that need to be discarded.

If your mealworms have been refrigerated, take out the amount you plan to feed and allow them to come to room temperature.

For best results, you can give them a small piece of carrot for 12–24 hours before feeding. This provides moisture and food while they warm up and become active.

After feeding, remove any remaining carrot and return the unused mealworms to the refrigerator.

We recommend doing this every 3–5 days for mealworms that are being stored and fed over time.

The right amount of mealworms depends on the animal, its size, age, and overall diet. Mealworms should generally be offered as part of a varied diet rather than as the only food.

For reptiles and amphibians, follow the feeding recommendations appropriate for the specific species and life stage. Birds and chickens can be offered mealworms as a treat or supplemental protein source.

When introducing mealworms, start with a small amount and adjust based on the animal's size, appetite, and regular diet.
