Bird of Paradise Potting Mix – Moisture-Balanced Tropical Soil
Bird of Paradise Potting Mix – Moisture-Balanced Tropical Soil
Bird of Paradise Potting Mix
Rich, Airy & Moisture-Balanced Mix for Healthy Roots
Give your Bird of Paradise a growing environment designed to support its vigorous growth and substantial root system.
Bird of Paradise plants are vigorous tropical plants that perform best in a growing medium that provides consistent moisture while still allowing excess water to drain freely.
Our Bird of Paradise Mix is formulated specifically for container growing. Coco coir and sphagnum peat moss help maintain moisture between waterings, while fine pine bark provides organic structure and air space throughout the root zone. Perlite and pumice improve drainage and long-lasting porosity, while calcined clay helps maintain structure and provides additional moisture- and nutrient-holding capacity. Worm castings contribute organic matter and gentle nutrition.
The result is a rich, airy, moisture-balanced mix designed to support vigorous tropical growth without keeping the roots continuously wet.
Why This Mix Works
Rich & Airy
Fine pine bark, perlite, and pumice help maintain structure and air space throughout the root zone.
Balanced Moisture
Coco coir and sphagnum peat moss help maintain consistent moisture between waterings.
Good Drainage & Structure
Perlite and pumice help excess water drain freely, while calcined clay provides long-lasting structure and additional moisture- and nutrient-holding capacity.
Made for Vigorous Growth
Worm castings provide organic matter and gentle nutrition while leaving room for you to adjust fertilization as your plant grows.
Ingredients
Coco Coir • Sphagnum Peat Moss • Pine Bark • Perlite • Pumice • Calcined Clay • Worm Castings
Best For
White Bird of Paradise • Giant Bird of Paradise • Strelitzia nicolai • Orange Bird of Paradise • Strelitzia reginae • Other Container-Grown Strelitzia
Suggested Watering
Check the mix regularly rather than following a fixed schedule.
Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the mix has begun to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely from the container.
Bird of Paradise plants prefer consistent moisture during active growth, but the root zone should never remain continuously saturated.
Large plants growing in warm, bright conditions may use water quickly, while plants growing indoors during cooler or lower-light periods will dry more slowly.
Allow slightly more of the mix to dry between waterings during periods of slower growth.
Never leave the container standing in water.
Fertilizing
Bird of Paradise plants are vigorous growers and benefit from regular feeding during active growth.
During spring and summer, feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate.
Regular moderate feeding is preferable to applying excessive fertilizer at one time. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
Because this mix contains only a modest amount of worm castings, additional fertilizer will still be needed for long-term container growth.
Repotting
Repot when roots have substantially filled the container, the plant begins drying much more quickly after watering, or drainage has noticeably slowed.
Bird of Paradise plants can tolerate being somewhat snug in their containers, so there is no need to move into an excessively large pot.
Move up only one pot size at a time and always use a sturdy container with unobstructed drainage holes.
White Bird of Paradise can eventually become a very large plant, so larger specimens may require increasingly substantial containers for both root room and stability.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
