Why This Mix Works

Calatheas and other Prayer Plants are tropical forest-floor plants that naturally grow in warm, humid environments with consistent moisture and organic-rich growing material. Their fine roots need moisture, but they also need oxygen and should never remain in waterlogged soil.

Our Calathea Mix is formulated for indoor growing, where lower humidity and changing light levels can make consistent moisture difficult to maintain. Coco coir and sphagnum moss help hold moisture between waterings, while fine pine bark and perlite maintain air space and drainage. Vermiculite helps retain moisture without making the mix heavy, while worm castings add organic matter and gentle nutrition.

The result is a light, moisture-retentive growing medium that helps maintain consistent moisture while keeping the root zone airy.

Suggested Watering

Check the mix regularly rather than following a fixed schedule. Keep the mix evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the surface has begun to dry, then water thoroughly until excess water drains from the pot.

Do not allow the mix to dry completely. During winter or periods of slower growth, allow the surface to dry slightly more between waterings while continuing to prevent the root ball from becoming completely dry.

Avoid leaving the pot sitting in standing water.
