Christmas & Thanksgiving Cactus Potting Mix
Airy, Moisture-Balanced Mix for Holiday Cacti
Give your Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti a growing environment designed around their natural preference for consistent moisture, excellent root aeration, and freely draining organic material.
Unlike desert cacti, Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti are tropical forest cacti. Their roots naturally grow in loose organic material where moisture is available but excess water can drain away quickly.
Our Christmas & Thanksgiving Cactus Mix is formulated specifically for these beautiful flowering plants, creating a soft, airy, moisture-balanced growing medium that supports healthy roots without remaining waterlogged.
Coco coir, sphagnum peat moss, and sphagnum moss help maintain moisture between waterings, while fine pine bark provides organic structure and air space. Perlite and pumice improve drainage and long-lasting porosity, while calcined clay helps maintain structure and buffer moisture within the mix.
The result is a lightweight, well-aerated mix that drains freely without drying as rapidly as a traditional desert cactus substrate.
Why This Mix Works
Made for Holiday Cacti
Formulated specifically for tropical Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti, which prefer more consistent moisture than desert-growing cactus varieties.
Balanced Moisture Retention
Coco coir, sphagnum peat moss, and sphagnum moss help maintain light, even moisture around the roots between waterings.
Excellent Drainage & Root Aeration
Fine pine bark, perlite, and pumice create an open structure that allows excess water to drain while maintaining air space around the roots.
Soft, Airy Organic Structure
Pine bark and sphagnum-based ingredients create a loose growing environment, while calcined clay provides durable pore space and helps regulate moisture within the mix.

Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti are tropical forest cacti with very different moisture requirements from traditional desert cactus varieties. This mix is formulated specifically for their needs.
Suggested Watering
Check the mix regularly rather than following a fixed watering schedule.
Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the mix has begun to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely from the container.
Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti prefer more consistent moisture than desert cacti, but the root zone should never remain continuously saturated.
Avoid allowing the entire root ball to remain completely dry for extended periods.
During active spring and summer growth, plants may require more frequent watering. After flowering and during periods of slower growth, allow slightly more time between waterings.
Watering frequency will vary depending on light, temperature, humidity, container size, and growing conditions.
Never leave the container standing in water.
Fertilizing
During active growth, feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at approximately half the manufacturer's recommended strength.
Regular light feeding during spring and summer can support healthy new growth and help the plant build energy for future flowering.
Reduce or discontinue feeding as growth slows and the plant approaches its flowering period.
Avoid excessive fertilization, which can contribute to fertilizer salt buildup and root stress.
Repotting
Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti generally perform well when somewhat snug in their containers and do not require frequent repotting.
Repot when roots have substantially filled the container, drainage has slowed, or the existing growing medium has begun to break down.
Move up only one pot size at a time and always use a container with unobstructed drainage holes.
Healthy plants can often remain in the same container for several years as long as the mix continues to drain well.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
