Chunky Aroid Potting Mix – Fast-Draining Tropical Plant Soil
Chunky Aroid Potting Mix – Fast-Draining Tropical Plant Soil
Chunky Aroid Potting Mix
Loose, Airy & Fast-Draining Mix for Tropical Aroids
Give your aroids the loose, chunky growing environment their roots prefer.
Many popular aroids naturally grow in tropical environments where their roots develop through loose organic material, bark, and other porous debris. These plants benefit from a root zone that provides plenty of air while still holding enough moisture for healthy growth.
Our Chunky Aroid Mix is formulated to create that balance. Coco coir and sphagnum moss help maintain moisture between waterings, while chunky pine bark and coco husk chips create large air spaces throughout the root zone. Perlite and pumice provide additional drainage and long-lasting porosity, while horticultural charcoal adds lightweight, porous structure.
The result is a loose, chunky, fast-draining mix that allows aroid roots to breathe without drying as quickly as a completely mineral substrate.
Why This Mix Works
Extra Chunky & Airy
Pine bark and coco husk chips create large air spaces throughout the root zone.
Balanced Moisture
Coco coir and sphagnum moss help maintain moisture between waterings without creating a dense growing medium.
Fast-Draining
Perlite and pumice provide additional drainage and long-lasting porosity.
Made for Aroids
One versatile mix designed for many popular tropical aroids that prefer a loose, well-aerated root environment.
Ingredients
Coco Coir • Pine Bark • Coco Husk Chips • Sphagnum Moss • Perlite • Pumice • Horticultural Charcoal
Best For
Monstera • Philodendron • Anthurium • Pothos / Epipremnum • Rhaphidophora • Syngonium / Arrowhead Plant • Scindapsus • Other Tropical Aroids
Suggested Watering
Check the mix regularly rather than following a fixed watering schedule.
Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the mix has begun to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely from the container.
Because this mix is intentionally chunky and highly aerated, it may dry somewhat faster than conventional potting soil. Watering frequency will vary depending on the plant, container size, light, temperature, humidity, and growing conditions.
Avoid allowing moisture-loving aroids to remain completely dry for extended periods, but never keep the root zone continuously saturated.
Never leave the container standing in water.
Fertilizing
This mix is intentionally formulated without a heavy fertilizer or compost charge so nutrition can be adjusted for the individual plant.
During active growth, feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate.
Reduce feeding during periods of slower growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots have substantially filled the container, the plant begins drying much more quickly between waterings, or the organic components of the mix have begun to break down.
Move up only one pot size at a time rather than placing the plant into an excessively large container.
Always use a container with unobstructed drainage holes.
For climbing aroids such as Monstera, Philodendron, and Rhaphidophora, repotting is also a good opportunity to add or upgrade a moss pole, plank, or other climbing support.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
