Lavender Potting Mix – Fast-Draining Mineral-Rich Soil
Lavender Potting Mix
Lean, Mineral-Rich & Fast-Draining Mix for Healthy Roots and Beautiful Blooms
Give your Lavender a growing environment designed around its natural preference for excellent drainage, abundant root aeration, and controlled moisture retention.
Lavender is native to dry, sunny regions where its roots grow in lean, well-drained soils that do not remain continuously wet. Whether you're growing English Lavender, French Lavender, Spanish Lavender, or Lavandin, healthy roots depend on a growing medium that allows excess water to drain quickly while maintaining enough moisture to support active growth.
Our Lavender Mix is formulated specifically for container-grown Lavender with an emphasis on fast drainage, durable mineral structure, and excellent airflow around the roots.
Coco coir and pine bark provide structure and controlled moisture retention, while perlite, pumice, calcined clay, granite grit, and coarse screened sand create a highly porous, mineral-rich root environment that helps the mix remain open and fast draining.
The result is a lean, airy, mineral-rich growing medium designed to support healthy roots, compact growth, and abundant flowering without keeping Lavender roots continuously wet.
Why This Mix Works
Made for Lavender
Formulated specifically for Lavender and its preference for a lean, open, fast-draining root environment.
Fast Drainage
Pumice, perlite, granite grit, calcined clay, and coarse screened sand help excess water move quickly through the root zone.
Excellent Root Aeration
Pine bark and durable mineral ingredients maintain air space around the roots and help resist compaction over time.
Controlled Moisture Retention
Coco coir provides a modest amount of moisture retention without turning the mix into a heavy, moisture-holding potting soil.
Mineral-Rich Structure
A substantial mineral component gives the mix long-lasting structure suited to Lavender's preference for dry, well-aerated conditions.

Suggested Watering
Check the mix before watering rather than following a fixed watering schedule.
Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the mix has dried, allowing the entire root zone to become evenly moistened.
Then allow all excess water to drain freely from the container.
Lavender prefers to become somewhat dry between waterings and should never remain continuously wet.
Established Lavender is relatively drought tolerant, while newly planted or recently repotted plants may require closer monitoring until their roots become established.
Container-grown Lavender may require more frequent watering during very hot, sunny, or windy weather, but always allow the mix to begin drying before watering again.
During cooler weather and periods of slower growth, reduce watering frequency.
Never leave the container standing in water.
Fertilizing
Lavender generally performs best in lean growing conditions and does not require heavy fertilization.
During active growth, use a balanced fertilizer lightly and according to the manufacturer's directions.
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft, leafy growth at the expense of compact growth and flowering.
Heavy or frequent fertilization is generally unnecessary for healthy container-grown Lavender.
Reduce or discontinue feeding during periods of slower growth.
Repotting
Repot when roots have substantially filled the container, drainage has slowed, or the existing growing medium has begun to break down.
Move the plant into a container only slightly larger than the existing root system.
Oversized containers can retain unnecessary moisture around the roots, which is especially undesirable for Lavender.
Always use a container with unobstructed drainage holes.
When repotting, position the plant at approximately the same depth it was growing previously and avoid burying the crown.
Terracotta and other breathable containers can be especially useful for growers who tend to water frequently because they allow the growing medium to dry more readily between waterings.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
