Lithops Potting Mix – Extra Gritty Mineral-Rich Soil
Lithops Potting Mix – Extra Gritty Mineral-Rich Soil
Lithops Potting Mix
Extra Gritty, Mineral-Rich & Fast-Draining Mix for Living Stones
Give your Lithops the highly mineral, fast-draining growing environment these unusual succulents require.
Lithops, commonly called Living Stones, are small succulents adapted to arid environments where they grow among sand, gravel, decomposed rock, and other mineral materials. Their roots require excellent drainage, abundant air space, and very little prolonged moisture.
Our Lithops Mix is formulated specifically for these plants with a very high proportion of durable mineral ingredients and only a small amount of organic material.
Pumice, lava rock, calcined clay, granite grit, and coarse screened sand create an open, fast-draining root zone that resists compaction. A small amount of coco coir provides limited moisture-holding capacity while still allowing the mix to dry quickly between appropriate waterings.
The result is an extra-gritty, highly mineral growing medium designed specifically for established Lithops and their unique watering needs.
Why This Mix Works
Highly Mineral Formula
Pumice, lava rock, calcined clay, granite grit, and coarse screened sand make up the majority of this specialized mix.
Very Fast-Draining
The high mineral content allows excess water to move rapidly through the root zone and helps the mix dry quickly.
Excellent Root Aeration
Durable mineral ingredients maintain open pore space and resist the compaction common in more organic potting mixes.
Minimal Organic Material
Only a small amount of coco coir is included to provide limited moisture retention while maintaining the highly mineral character Lithops prefer.
Ingredients
Pumice • Lava Rock • Calcined Clay • Granite Grit • Coarse Screened Sand • Coco Coir
Best For
Lithops • Living Stones • Established Lithops Species & Cultivars
This mix is intended for established Lithops rather than germinating seeds or very young seedlings, which require different moisture management.
This mix is considerably more mineral and faster draining than our general Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix.
Suggested Watering
Lithops should be watered according to their annual growth cycle rather than a fixed weekly schedule.
During active growth, water thoroughly and then allow the mix to dry completely before watering again.
Lithops store substantial amounts of water in their leaves and tolerate dryness much better than prolonged wet conditions.
Watering should generally be greatly reduced or stopped during summer dormancy.
During winter and early spring, as a new pair of leaves develops inside the old pair, keep the plant dry while the new leaves absorb moisture stored in the old leaves. Resume normal watering only after the old leaves have become dry and shriveled.
Overwatering is one of the most common causes of Lithops failure.
Because species, growing conditions, temperature, light, and seasonal growth patterns vary, always observe the plant and dryness of the mix rather than watering strictly by calendar.
Fertilizing
Lithops require very little fertilizer.
If feeding is necessary, use a low-nitrogen fertilizer very sparingly during active growth.
Avoid heavy or frequent fertilization and do not fertilize while the plant is dormant.
Repotting
Lithops grow slowly and do not require frequent repotting.
Although the visible portion of the plant is small, Lithops develop a substantial root system. Use a container approximately 3–5 inches deep with an unobstructed drainage hole so the roots have room to develop.
When repotting, position the plant so the top of the body remains slightly above the surface of the mix.
Avoid excessively large containers that hold unnecessary moisture.
Made for Your Plants
At Blooming Faith Farm, we make our growing mixes with carefully selected ingredients to create practical, plant-focused blends for home growers.
Our Lithops Mix is a specialized formula designed specifically for established Living Stones, with very high mineral content, minimal organic material, rapid drainage, and long-lasting root aeration.
Please note: This is a specialty mineral-based potting mix made from the ingredients listed above. It is not conventional potting soil or our general Cactus & Succulent Mix. Plants, pots, and decorative materials shown in photos are for illustration only and are not included unless specifically stated.
For best results, always consider your Lithops species, annual growth cycle, growing conditions, container, drainage, light, temperature, and watering needs.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
