Orchid Bark Mix – Bark-Based Potting Mix for Epiphytic Orchids
Orchid Bark Mix – Bark-Based Potting Mix for Epiphytic Orchids
Give your epiphytic orchids the open, airy growing environment they naturally prefer with our handcrafted Orchid Bark Mix, formulated for indoor containers.
Why This Mix Works
Many popular orchids, including Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, and Dendrobium, naturally grow attached to trees rather than in traditional soil. Their roots are adapted to an environment where they receive plenty of air, drain quickly after rain, and absorb moisture from surrounding organic material.
Our Orchid Mix is designed to recreate those conditions for indoor container growing. Medium-sized pine bark provides the primary structure and air space, while coco husk chips add additional structure and moisture retention. Sphagnum moss helps prevent the mix from becoming excessively dry between waterings, while perlite and horticultural charcoal support drainage and airflow.
This is a bark-based orchid mix—not a traditional potting soil.
Ingredients
Pine Bark • Coco Husk Chips • Perlite • Sphagnum Moss • Horticultural Charcoal
Best For
Our Orchid Bark Mix is formulated for:
- Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids)
- Cattleya
- Dendrobium
- Oncidium
- Other epiphytic orchids
For terrestrial orchids, use a specialty mix formulated for their particular growing requirements.
Suggested Watering
Check the mix before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. When the bark and moss are beginning to dry, water thoroughly with room-temperature or lukewarm water and allow the pot to drain completely.
Do not allow the roots to remain constantly wet, but do not let the orchid dry completely for extended periods.
Never leave the pot sitting in water. Avoid getting water trapped in the crown of the plant.

Fertilizing
Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.
Repotting
Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
