String-of-Plants Potting Mix

Fast-Draining, Airy Mix for Trailing Succulents & Semi-Succulents

Give your favorite String-of-Plants a growing environment designed around their need for rapid drainage, excellent root aeration, and controlled moisture retention.

Popular trailing plants such as String of Pearls, String of Bananas, and String of Hearts store moisture in their leaves, stems, or tubers and generally perform best when their roots are allowed to dry substantially between waterings.

Our String-of-Plants Mix is formulated specifically for these trailing succulent and semi-succulent plants, providing a light, airy root environment that drains quickly while still retaining a small amount of useful moisture.

Coco coir provides controlled moisture retention, while fine pine bark adds organic structure and air space. Pumice, perlite, lava rock, calcined clay, and granite grit create a durable mineral framework that promotes rapid drainage and helps the mix remain open over time. A small amount of worm castings contributes organic matter and gentle nutrition.

The result is a fast-draining, highly aerated growing medium designed to reduce prolonged wet conditions while still supporting healthy roots and vigorous trailing growth.

Why This Mix Works

Made for String-of-Plants
Formulated specifically for trailing succulent and semi-succulent plants that prefer an airy root zone and substantial drying between waterings.

Fast Drainage
Pumice, perlite, lava rock, calcined clay, and granite grit help excess water move rapidly through the container.

Excellent Root Aeration
Pine bark and durable mineral ingredients maintain open pore space around the roots and help resist compaction over time.

Controlled Moisture Retention
Coco coir retains a modest amount of moisture without turning the mix into a dense, moisture-heavy potting soil.

Gentle Organic Nutrition
A small amount of worm castings contributes organic matter and mild nutrition while allowing you to control long-term fertilization.

This mix is designed for trailing plants that benefit from a fast-draining root environment and periods of dryness between waterings.

Individual String-of-Plants can vary somewhat in their moisture preferences, so watering should always be adjusted for the particular plant and growing conditions.

Suggested Watering

Check the mix before watering rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

Allow a substantial portion of the growing medium to dry before watering again.

When watering, thoroughly saturate the root zone and allow all excess water to drain freely from the container.

Avoid repeatedly adding small amounts of water to an already-moist root zone.

Most plants suited to this mix tolerate some drying considerably better than they tolerate continuously wet conditions.

Plants grown in small containers, hanging baskets, terracotta pots, or warm bright locations may dry more quickly than plants grown in larger or less porous containers.

Water less frequently during cooler weather, lower-light conditions, or periods of slower growth.

Never allow the container to remain standing in water.

Fertilizing

String-of-Plants generally do not require heavy feeding.

During active growth, use a balanced houseplant or cactus and succulent fertilizer at a reduced rate according to the manufacturer's directions.

Regular light feeding is preferable to heavy or frequent fertilizer applications.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth and unnecessary stretching.

Because this mix contains only a small amount of worm castings, supplemental fertilizer may be used during active growth as needed.

Reduce or discontinue feeding during periods of slower growth.

Repotting

Repot when roots have substantially filled the container, drainage has slowed, or the existing growing medium has begun to break down.

Move into a container only slightly larger than the existing root system.

Oversized containers can hold unnecessary moisture around a relatively small root system.

Shallow containers can work especially well for many trailing String-of-Plants because their root systems are often relatively compact.

Always use a container with unobstructed drainage holes.

Handle trailing stems carefully during repotting, as many String-of-Plants have delicate stems that can break when moved.

Fertilizing

Feed during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended rate. Reduce feeding during periods of slower winter growth or lower light.

Repotting

Repot when roots begin filling the container, growing from the drainage holes, or when the plant begins drying out much faster than usual. Move to a pot only one size larger to avoid leaving excess wet soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
